Shopping for Easter candles in Corfu
It had been many years since I attended Easter services, and my last one was the complex and inspiring public ceremony in Corfu Town. Having friends of the Greek Orthodox faith, I decided to join their services in Ocala on Easter evening.
Holy Week is the most important week in the Orthodox calendar, and Easter evening its culmination. Although I could not understand most of the Greek, it felt comforting to partake in an ages-old ceremony, including the lighting of the candles and the phrase Χριστός Ανέστη! (Christ Rises!) repeated many times by the congregation. With the stroke of midnight, the Son is risen, indeed.
